A weave of lives that brush against each other, seek one another, and lose themselves in a continuous play of closeness and distance. Oscillation explores the fragile balance between chance and destiny, between fortuitous encounters and irreversible choices, in a fragmented and circular narrative that leaves space for the unspoken, for absences, for memories that surface and dissolve.
Relationships form and unravel with the lightness of a moment: a coincidence alters the course of a life, an absence becomes the focal point of an entire story, a farewell makes way for a new possibility. The characters move along the blurred boundary between reality and dream, awareness and unawareness, navigating moments of uncertainty and longing, until they find themselves, perhaps, in the unexpected embrace of a final encounter.
The illustrations amplify the sense of suspension and fragmentation within the novel. With a style suspended between realism and abstraction, the images capture moments of solitude, desire, and restlessness, visually reflecting the precarious balance of existence. Oscillation is a journey into the uncertainty of living, where every step forward may be a return, every encounter a possibility for loss or salvation.

Then I had in my hands Oscillazione by Mario Sughi, three minimal and minimal stories that breathe in an imagery that comes out forcefully in the illustrations of the same author who lives in Dublin and signs his works nerosunero

Mario Sughi's writing maintains the characteristics of the illustrations: bright and vibrant colors that blend and come to life on a flat surface. Elegance, volume, and depth of intent and meaning.

The novel takes on a form that becomes an imaginative, dreamlike substance while exploring, in a lyrical but never rhetorical tone, the fragility of relationships, the passing of time and its relentless flow, and the persistence of memory — a legacy sometimes welcome, at times unbearably painful. Not to be missed.

The characters, especially the female ones, occupy a predominant space. They stand out vividly beyond the pages of the text, animated by an almost tangible presence. Women on bicycles, mothers seeking their own individuality, girls who like themselves on the outside but not on the inside. The author’s illustrations are not a mere accessory to the narrative, but true performers in their own right, amplifying the emotions and silences between one word and the next.

Mario Sughi’s great gift is his ability to breathe life into words rich with meaning, descriptions laden with pain and surprise, joy and movement, and to set words and images in dialogue.

Sughi also revisits the theme — through loves, friendships, and first encounters — of relationships, and it is no coincidence that the name of this Italian author based in Dublin is linked with that of Sally Rooney, a writer with a keen interest in this very subject and for whom he illustrated the cover of the novel Normal People. Once again we find light, almost surreal atmospheres in their attention to detail; the importance of chance, of what is left unsaid, of what is hidden between the lines and within the images.
